    Everything about Bird Spikes

Do Pigeon Spikes Harm or Injure Birds?
All Bird Spikes ranges are humanized. The RSPB recommends bird spikes as one of the best long-term methods of bird-proofing buildings. The pins of the spikes act as a visual and physical barrier so the birds can no longer gain access to the ledge to perch on it, moving them to other, more accessible areas.

Are they specially designed for pigeons?
They are designed for pigeons and other birds of a similar size. The length of the pin is the optimum height and angle to deter pigeons. For larger birds such as seagulls, a specialist seagull spike should be installed as it has longer pins in proportion to the gull’s longer legs. Smaller birds such as sparrows and starlings may overcome both spikes. There is a sparrow and starling spike available that has a denser pattern that does not allow small birds access.

What is the difference between steel spikes and plastic spikes?
Both types of spikes protect the ledge equally; the only differences are aesthetics and cost. Plastic spikes are slightly cheaper and reflect the background color of where they are installed. The stainless steel version is considered slightly less visible against buildings due to its thinner matt pins and is often the choice of pest control professionals.

Does steel rust and plastic become brittle?
The stainless steel bird spikes are made of stainless steel and the plastic spikes are made of UV Durolon polycarbonate that won’t become brittle or yellow.

Can I install spikes on uneven, curved, or decorative surfaces?
Bird Spikes can be fitted to any surface, whether uneven or curved. The base has snappable sections that can be broken with just your fingers. Installing these smaller pieces means any shape of the surface can be protected from birds.

Why do they come in varying widths?
The varying widths that spikes come in enable the installer to choose the most appropriate size when fitting the spikes either to a narrow pipe or large window ledge. Different heights account for different-sized birds. Due to their long legs, seagulls can overcome dove pins of lesser height. Therefore, a specialist seagull spike was developed.
